On February 28th, the most reputable award giving body in Korea, the Korean Music Awards (often compared to the Grammy’s) held its ceremony at the Guro Arts Valley Theater and announced the winners to the various categories concerning different genres of music.
This year, more than the awards itself, the ceremony was highly anticipated after the realization that Esens is expected to attend and possibly give out an award. As tradition in the KMA’s, the last year’s winners are the ones obliged to present the same award to the new winners. Last year, Esens’ “The Anecdote” won both album of the year and best rap album. True enough, the rapper did attend and also did a stage with XXX’s FRNK as his DJ. It felt somewhat funny because last year, Hwaji presented the best rap album to Esens after he won the same award last year with his album “EAT”. This year, Esens presented the award back to Hwaji for his album “ZISSOU”. Will next year mean another Esens win?
From the Korean Hiphop scene, the winners are:
Artist Of The Year : Jay Park
Best Rap & Hiphop Album : “ZISSOU” (Hwaji)
Best Rap & Hiphop Song : “FOREVER” (Bewhy)
Best R&B & Soul Album : “Everything You Wanted” (Jay Park)
Best R&B & Soul Song : “삼선동 사거리 (Sungbuk-gu Kids)” (Jeebanoff)
Jeebanoff won his first ever major award this year despite being a rookie in the scene and was present at the ceremony with the other members of his crew, Houseonmars. We are really waiting for more opportunities for him. More than the KHOP names, we also want to commend some of the indie acts we follow and won including Silica Gel that won this year’s Rookie of the year, Remnants of the Fallen for the best metal and hardcore album and 9 And The Numbers for the best modern rock song!
Soran’s Go Youngbae was MC for the night while Samuel Seo and The Monotones performed some of their songs.
