Some of you may have already noticed how much I support the K-Indie scene as well along with me being a loyalist to the KHOP scene. And somehow, the month of May has become the comeback season for a number of K-Indie acts including Idiotape, Thornapple, Parasol, and much more. However, this month, there have been a number of collaborations between KHOP artists and K-Rock bands. And personally, I am loving each and every one of them.
On May 10th, one of the longest-running punk rock bands in the country, No Brain, released their first full-length album in five years after their album from 2011. “Brainless” is an album composed of 11 songs. Two of the tracks have music videos, “My Leather Jacket” and “Living Paycheck to Paycheck”. One of the tacks in the album is “Mommy, The World Is Scary” which features Buckwilds leader JTong. No Brain and JTong have been doing music together from 7 years ago already, the rapper even incorporating rock into some of his own songs such as “GuGuGaga”. For this track though, JTong was given control over the verses while the band’s vocalist, Lee Sungwoo did the chorus. As you listen, you can’t really say that it’s a rockj song mixed with rap, or the other way around. They completely complimented each other creating a new sound.
On the 19th of May, a new music project was commenced that aims to create a new variety of sound by mixing Korean rock and Korean hiphop. This is called the Snowball Project. There will be numerous collaborations expected to come from this project including video, art, and music. In the music platform, it is said that Crying Nut will be working with Nuck of Soul Dive while DanPyunSun and The Sailors will work on a project with the female rapper, Choi Sam, releasing the tracks in the coming months and later on dropping a compilation album with all collaborations. The first collaboration released is between the rock band Harry Big Button (a leading name in the rock scene) and Garion (considered legends as well in hiphop scene) with the track “Make My Day” later on releasing an MV.
And just today, May 26th, rapper Born Kim and Life&Time has dropped a collaboration single titled “Goes On”. The track features the musicality of Life&Time and quirky singing from Jinsil along with Born Kim rapping on the verses. Born Kim is known to have worked before with other artists from Happy Robot Records, Life&Time’s label, including Shaun and Hyunsong of the KOXX. Check out the MV below!
I may also want to add, that on this same day, although it’s not rock, the music video to “Grotesque” has dropped featuring the rapper Paloalto. This song is the work of EDM producer team, Spacecowboy. This may be the first EDM-based track I have ever heard Paloalto rap along to, but it is sounding so good!
This makes me wonder what other amazing genre fusions we are about to hear in the coming days and months. As I am also a fan of the K-Indie scene, I will watch out closely for all of this. And also, please expect a new category in this blog highlighting some K-Indie artists on a weekly basis.
